Program Description

Vaccinations are critical for preventing certain infections in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who will be taking immunosuppressive medications for managing their disease. This case focuses on the appropriate application of vaccines in RA patients, from the time of diagnosis and throughout the course of their disease. Specific types of vaccines to be administered, as well as their timing, are discussed. A discussion of the new recombinant, adjuvanted Herpes zoster vaccine and its use in RA patients is presented.

Intended Audience

This activity was developed for primary care clinicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, rheumatologists, rheumatology nurse practitioners, rheumatology physician assistants, and other healthcare providers that provide care for patients at risk for RA or who are involved in the long-term co-management of RA patients.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Order proper vaccinations for patients starting Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drug (DMARD) therapy
  • Integrate best practices for co-management of RA patients with rheumatologists and other clinical specialists into patient care
