Program Description

The initial purpose of this educational activity is to present background information and a general introduction on the significance of sleep position in mild, moderate and severe OSA. POSA is a phenomenon that is important in mild and moderate OSA; in severe OSA, POSA is rare. Positional therapy (PT) with new generation smart positional devices is effective, with usually good compliance. It is cheap and reversible, and patient friendly. Experience with PT as only treatment or in combination with oral devices, after upper airway surgery, or after weight loss, will be discussed.

The additional purpose of this educational activity is to present evidence for the clinical effectiveness of a position treatment device for treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Comparison of position treatment with the gold standard of treatment (positive airway pressure) found that the position treatment device resulted in non-inferior efficacy but greater adherence in patients with positional obstructive sleep apnea. The need for proper patient selection and follow-up (including monitoring of adherence) will be discussed.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for medical professionals who have a clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea: primary care physicians, sleep medicine specialists, dentists specializing in dental sleep medicine, neurologists, pulmonologists, ENTs, maxillofacial surgeons, bariatric surgeons, advanced Practice Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians Assistants, Managed Care Medical Directors, and other Practitioners and Payers.

Educational Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Compare the presenting findings of patients with positional obstructive sleep apnea (POSA) and exclusively positional obstructive sleep apnea (ePOSA).
  • State the appropriate use of positioning therapy for the subset of patients with POSA.
  • Identify the use of positioning therapy in combination with other treatment modalities for patients with obstructive sleep apnea partially treated by other therapies.
  • Recognize the limitations of positioning therapy including the patient population where POSA therapy is not the optimal therapeutic option.
