Program Description

Current epidemiological findings estimate that 50% of the population will experience one or more mental disorders in their lifetime. Of these individuals, 25% reported the presence of a mental disorder in the past year. Despite clinicians' best efforts, only 50% of patients who present with a psychiatric disorder are recognized, only 50% of those recognized are treated, and only 50% of those treated are effectively treated.

Given the high prevalence of mental health disease and low rates of accurate diagnosis and treatment, clinicians require further education on mental health. Since one-third of visits to a primary care clinician have a mental health component, both psychiatry specialists and primary care/family medicine clinicians will benefit from this information.

This activity—which focuses on Field of Dreams—is part of a series on increasing awareness of the signs and symptoms of various mental health disorders using characters from popular culture movies as case study examples. Clinicians will review specific scenarios from these movies, express their diagnosis by responding to poll questions, then review detailed didactic information about how to properly distinguish and diagnose each condition.

Educational Objectives

After participating in this activity, clinicians should be better able to:

  • Describe the signs and symptoms of various mental health disorders using patient case examples from popular culture movies
  • Differentiate among common psychiatric conditions
  • Identify individuals with recognizable symptoms of mental health disorders in an accurate and timely manner
