Program Description

Bipolar depression is often missed by clinicians in practice. Moreover non evidence based treatments are used commonly for this disorder. This program will address the evidence based treatments for bipolar depression including the role for antidepressants. The risk benefit ratio of FDA approved treatments will also be discussed.

Intended Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and other healthcare providers engaged in the care of patients with psychiatric disorders.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Review current evidence-based treatments for bipolar depression
  • Recognize the role for use of antidepressants – which, and when; not if
  • Discuss the risk-benefit ratio of mood stabilizers, second-generation antipsychotics, and emerging novel therapeutics for bipolar depression
