Unintended pregnancy is a major public health problem in the United States. Unintended pregnancy usually is the result of failure to use contraception or inconsistent or incorrect use of effective contraceptive methods. Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are the most effective and consistently used contraceptives. This two-part series addresses guidelines that encourage the use of LARCs because of the high efficacy, safety, and ease of use.
This activity was planned to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists caring for patients interested in contraceptive options.
At the conclusion of this application-based educational activity, participants should be able to:
Review key points on counseling patients on contraceptive options, including LARCs
Apply recommendations to determine the best LARC option for a patient
Discuss variations in access and availability of LARCs in different healthcare systems
