myTAKE: A new dawn for CME?

Share this content:

What's the future of continuing medical education (CME)? CME professionals have gathered in San Francisco for the next couple days to bat around that question and its various implications at the 42nd Annual Conference of the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions.

Working under the theme “Shaping Our Profession — Demonstrating Our Value,” the conference, which opens today, takes place at the doorstep of great change in healthcare and healthcare education. With a new administration in Washington promising less regulation for both healthcare and industry, new value-based reimbursement for clinicians (can the conference's value theme be a coincidence?), and emerging technologies such as virtual reality and simulation promising great change, how this group responds will go a long way in determining what CME will look like tomorrow.

Among the issues bound to arise:

  • What is this MIPS thing and why does it matter for CME?
  • What new educational techniques can we expect in CME offerings?
  • What role will technology play in CME?
  • Will this be the year there is agreement on how to handle MOC requirements?
  • Must all CME have a "C"--that is, does uncertified medical education have a role in the brave new value-based world?
  • How does social media fit in?

Conference sessions will cover most of these questions and many others, and we'll give you a front-row seat, but without the airfare and hotel bill. Watch this space for daily updates on what you need to know from the conference.
