Low Complication Rates With Rib Cartilage Use in Rhinoplasty

MONDAY, Dec. 1, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- For autologous rib cartilage use in rhinoplasty, the overall long-term complications and donor-site morbidity rates are low, according to a meta-analysis published online Nov. 27 in JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.

Jee Hye Wee, M.D., from the National Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea, and colleagues reviewed all studies reporting complications associated with autologous rib cartilage use in rhinoplasty. Studies conducted with at least 10 patients and at least one postoperative long-term complication or donor-site morbidity in rhinoplasty were included. Data were included for 491 patients from 10 studies, with a mean follow-up of 33.3 months across all studies.

In meta-analysis, the researchers found that the combined rates were 3.08 percent for warping, 0.22 percent for resorption, 0.56 percent for infection, 0.39 percent for displacement, 5.45 percent for hypertrophic chest scarring, and 0 percent for pneumothorax. The rate for revision surgery was 14.7 percent.

"Because a limited number of studies and patients were eligible, and consistent definitions of complications were lacking in this meta-analysis, future studies with a larger series of patients and objective outcome measurements are needed to obtain more reliable results," the authors write.
