Fecal Immunochemical Test Predicts Mucosal Healing in UC

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 21, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- Fecal immunochemical test (FIT) is a reliable noninvasive marker for predicting mucosal healing (MH) in ulcerative colitis (UC) patients, according to a review published online Feb. 10 in the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Cong Dai, Ph.D., from China Medical University in Shenyang City, and colleagues evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of FIT in predicting MH of patients with UC, based on meta-analyses of six studies (625 patients).

The researchers found that pooled sensitivity and specificity values for predicting MH in UC were 0.77 and 0.81, respectively. The FIT level had a high rule-in value for predicting MH in UC (positive likelihood ratio, 3.79) and a moderate rule-out value (negative likelihood ratio, 0.26). The results of the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis (area under the curve, 0.88) and diagnostic odds ratio (18.08) also showed improved discrimination for identifying MH in UC.

"Our meta-analysis has found that FIT is a simple, reliable noninvasive marker for predicting MH in UC patients," the authors write.
