TUESDAY, June 26, 2018 (HealthDay News) -- Use of an automated, closed-loop insulin delivery system results in significantly better glycemic control than conventional subcutaneous insulin therapy among patients with type 2 diabetes receiving noncritical care, according to a study published online June 25 in the New England Journal of Medicine to coincide with the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association, held from June 22 to 26 in Orlando, Florida.

Lia Bally, Ph.D., from the University of Bern in Switzerland, and colleagues randomized adults with type 2 diabetes who required subcutaneous insulin therapy to receive closed-loop insulin delivery (70 patients) or conventional subcutaneous insulin therapy (66 patients).

The researchers found that the mean percentage of time that the sensor glucose measurement was in the target range of 100 to 180 mg/dL was 65.8±16.8 percent and 41.5±16.9 percent in the closed-loop and control groups, respectively; values above the target range were found in 23.6±16.6 percent and in 49.5±22.8 percent of the patients, respectively. The mean glucose level was 154 mg/dL and 188 mg/dL in the closed-loop and control groups, respectively. No significant difference was seen between the groups in the duration of hypoglycemia or the amount of insulin delivered.

"Among inpatients with type 2 diabetes receiving noncritical care, the use of an automated, closed-loop insulin-delivery system resulted in significantly better glycemic control than conventional subcutaneous insulin therapy, without a higher risk of hypoglycemia," the authors write.

Abbott Diabetes Care supplied discounted equipment. Several authors disclosed financial ties to pharmaceutical and medical device companies, including Abbott, and two authors hold patents for closed-loop insulin delivery systems.
