Program Description

Recent advances in the understanding of the immunology and molecular biology of melanoma have changed the therapeutic landscape for patients with advanced or metastatic melanoma (MM). Research has led to the introduction of breakthrough drugs that work by targeting the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway in melanoma cells, which harbors BRAF mutations (targeted therapy) or turning off normal brakes (CTLA-4, PD-1) in the immune system (checkpoint inhibitors). This latter class of therapies, characterized as immune checkpoint inhibitors, has demonstrated improved objective response rates and overall survival in large randomized clinical trials and is the focus of this learning initiative. This module will help guide healthcare professionals who treat patients with MM, including oncologists, oncology nurses, and oncology advanced practice providers, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants. This interactive case activity will provide a thorough review of the emerging knowledge about the immunology of MM and the new immunotherapies that have been built upon that knowledge. It will also address the latest clinical evidence supporting the place of these drugs in the melanoma treatment paradigm. In addition, the unique side effects, termed immune-related adverse effects (irAEs) of these new treatments will be discussed. Finally, the activity will illustrate the development of individualized treatment plans for patients with this often lethal, but now more treatable, cancer.

Intended Audience

This activity is designed for oncology physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who treat and manage patients with metastatic melanoma. No prerequisites required.

Educational Objectives

After participating in this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:

  • REVIEW at the most recent data on immune checkpoint inhibitors for the treatment of advanced or metastatic/unresectable melanoma.
  • IMPLEMENT strategies to recognize and manage irAEs in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors for melanoma.
  • DEVELOP individualized melanoma treatment plans that appropriately incorporate and dose immunotherapy.
