Program Description

The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often pose a diagnostic challenge, as they overlap with many other conditions. Furthermore, clinicians may approach treatment without a complete understanding of how shared pathobiologic mechanisms help to define IBS and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) as a continuum of disorders. This is the first of 2 video myCME House Calls in which a noted expert in the management of IBS/CIC and a primary care physician discuss the criteria for a positive diagnosis—which can usually be made without extensive, costly testing—and how to select targeted therapy based on the underlying pathology, as well as how to communicate effectively using a shared decision-making approach. In this video, the discussion centers on a patient who presents with diarrhea-predominant IBS symptoms (IBS-D).

Intended Audience

Clinicians who manage IBS/CIC, including gastroenterologists, internal medicine and family medicine physicians, gynecologists, pharmacists, and nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) who work in gastroenterology, gynecology, or primary care settings

Educational Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Apply an understanding of the pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) as a continuum of disorders
  • Initiate appropriate workup at first patient report(s) of relevant signs and symptoms to reduce the time to accurate diagnosis of diarrhea-predominant IBS (IBS-D)
  • Develop an individualized, evidence-based treatment plan for each patient with IBS-D
  • Implement patient-centric communication strategies to support prompt identification of inadequate or poorly tolerated therapy in IBS-D
