Program Description

Persistent myths and misperceptions regarding long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) raise barriers to wider use of these highly effective methods. While intrauterine devices and the subdermal contraceptive implant provide contraceptive efficacy that is comparable to surgical sterilization, many clinicians remain unduly conservative about which patients may be appropriate candidates for these top-tier methods. This myCME™ Medically Speaking roundtable counters myth and misperception with evidence-based guidance on LARC.

Intended Audience

Obstetrician-gynecologists as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants who provide healthcare for reproductive-aged women

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Differentiate the long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods from second- and third-tier methods with regard to efficacy, duration of efficacy, safety, tolerability, and noncontraceptive benefits
  • Apply the US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use to identify patients who may be candidates for LARC methods
  • Assess the evidence regarding use of LARC methods in young and/or nulliparous women
  • Provide evidence-based patient counseling and education on LARC methods to dispel misperceptions and support informed contraceptive decisions
