Treatment Strategies for Acute
Low Back Pain

Acute low back pain (LBP) affects a large number of Americans each year, and is equally prevalent among both men and women. In regard to the management of LBP, the pharmacist's expanded role in drug therapy involves drug product selection, and prescribing and dispensing laws are evolving. Pharmacists involved in product substitution can become civilly liable under the legal theories of negligence, express or implied warranties, and strict product liability. This series, which includes a digital monograph and three related case studies, highlights the implications of generic substitution and the standards of care that pharmacists and clinicians must satisfy when engaging in generic substitution for the treatment of low back pain.

Treatment Strategies for Acute Low Back Pain:
Focus on Skeletal Muscle Relaxants

This monograph addresses acute low back pain, which affects a large number of Americans each year. It focuses on the most current medications, particularly skeletal muscle relaxants, in order to help pharmacists better select treatments for patients with acute low back pain and facilitate their return to normal activity.

Case Study 1: Legal Liability for Generic Substitution

This case study features the legal implications of generic substitution, the standards of care that must be satisfied, and the legal liability involved for a pharmacist when engaging in generic substitution for the treatment of acute low back pain.

Case Study 2: Legal Liability for Inappropriate Generic/Therapeutic Substitution

A second case study further examines the legal implications of generic substitution for pharmacists for the treatment of acute low back pain. Discussion of legal liability includes a focus on warning/counseling the patient, breach of duty, and recovery of damages.

Case Study 3: Patient With Cervical Sprain and Low Back Pain Following a Motor Vehicle Accident

This third case study focuses on the nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment options for cervical sprain and acute low back pain, including their efficacy, safety, and tolerability.
