Program Description:

The most common cause of secondary osteoporosis is attributed to glucocorticoid use. Even those who take low-dose prednisone are at risk of vertebral and nonvertebral fractures.

Activity Objectives:

After participating in this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify GIO as the most common form of secondary osteoporosis

  • Explain the complications of chronic glucocorticoid (GC) use and assess patients’ risk of fractures.

  • Select the appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies for patients who cannot avoid GC therapy.
