Guided Meditation, Music Cuts Anxiety During Breast Biopsy

FRIDAY, Feb. 5, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Listening to guided meditation or music significantly lowers patient anxiety and fatigue during imaging-guided breast biopsy, according to a study published online Feb. 4 in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.

Mary Scott Soo, M.D., from the Duke Cancer Institute in Durham, N.C., and colleagues evaluated the impact of guided meditation and music interventions on patient anxiety, pain, and fatigue during image-guided breast biopsy among 121 women. The standard-care control group received supportive dialogue from the biopsy team.

The researchers found that the meditation and music groups reported significantly greater reductions in anxiety and fatigue after biopsy than the standard-care control group (P < 0.05), while the standard-care control group reported increased fatigue after biopsy. Compared to the music group, the meditation group also showed significantly lower pain during biopsy (P = 0.03). There were no significant differences in patient-perceived quality of radiologist-patient communication between the groups.

"These simple, inexpensive interventions could improve women's experiences during core-needle breast biopsy," the authors write.
