AMA: Two Internet Tools Can Help Educate Patients

THURSDAY, April 13, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Internet resources can be helpful for educating patients and include myhealthfinder, which offers personalized recommendations for preventive services and a diabetes prevention tool, according to a report from the American Medical Association.

Healthfinder.gov, managed by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, provides reliable information for patients, offering resources for decision making regarding health. Within the website, myhealthfinder is an interactive tool with personalized and evidence-based recommendations for preventive services. The tool offers prevention guidance and information based on patient age, sex, and pregnancy status. Evidence-based recommendations from multiple agencies are included in the tool. Health care providers can refer patients to the tool to encourage shared decision making and to help patients prepare for their office visits.

An additional tool is the Prevent Diabetes STAT, which provides prediabetes awareness and education in order to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Patients can find information about prediabetes, and take a test to ascertain whether they are at risk. Information is available about local diabetes prevention programs to allow patients to take preventive action. Furthermore, physicians can download toolkits to engage patients and health care teams, including information for patients as well as clinic tools to prevent or identify prediabetes.

"Physicians can download toolkits that help them engage their patients and their health care teams in preventing type 2 diabetes," according to the report.
