Program Description:
Like hyperlipidemia and hypertension, diabetes means elevated risk for cardiovascular disease. Management—and patient adherence—can be particularly challenging when these conditions are comorbid. Here, a 64-year-old man whose hyperlipidemia and hypertension are controlled resists taking the additional steps necessary when he is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus, even though he appears to be experiencing complications related to his diabetes.
INTENDED AUDIENCE:
Primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.
Activity Objectives:
After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
- Identify patients who are at risk for cardiovascular (CV) complications due to comorbid diabetes and dyslipidemia
- Explain the pathophysiologic interrelationship among CV disease, diabetes, and dyslipidemia
- Implement patient-specific therapeutic strategies to achieve optimal glycemic and lipid levels
- Educate patients about CV risk reduction through adherence to a combined regimen of medication use and therapeutic lifestyle changes
