Ethnocentric Approaches to Treating Chronic Pain: A Case Clinic Series

This 3-case series focuses on chronic pain among patients of different ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds and how health disparities, cultural beliefs, and customs may affect how patients explain their ailments and respond to medical treatment. A clinician's consideration of multiple therapies—including complementary and alternative medicine—may engender greater patient trust and provide them with more satisfactory relief from their chronic pain.

Case 3: A 56-year-old African-American Man Complaining of Burning Pain in His Feet

In developing rapport with chronic pain patients, it's not just what you prescribe—it’s how you do it—that builds trust.
