Program Description:

This case focuses on a 64-year-old Hispanic female with type 2 diabetes mellitus who is diagnosed with estrogen-receptor- (ER) and progesterone-receptor- (PR) positive breast cancer. This patient is notable not only because breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women, but that patients with preexisting diabetes who develop cancer have an approximately 50% higher risk for long-term, all-cause mortality. Using the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines as a point of departure for treatment, the clinical decisions for this patient centered on the type and duration of endocrine therapy in the adjuvant setting, the role in particular of tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitor therapy, and the management of associated adverse events.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

Oncologists, thoracic surgeons, pathologists, internists, ob/gyns, and other clinicians who treat or manage women with breast cancer.

Activity Objectives:

After taking part in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Evaluate the efficacy of aromatase inhibition for adjuvant therapy in patients with estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer

  • Manage the adverse events that arise from the use of aromatase inhibitors
