Program Description:
Cease Smoking Today (CS2day) is a collaborative partnership designed to reduce the number of persons who smoke and decrease morbidity and mortality from smoking-related illness. Patients with psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders have smoking rates that are two to four times higher than and are likely to die 25 years earlier than the general population. Yet, less than 13% of psychiatrists offer smoking cessation counseling to these patients. The Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence 2008 Update recommends that all smokers with psychiatric disorders be offered treatment to help them overcome their dependence on tobacco. This interactive, case-based activity walks learners through an unfolding clinical scenario with several decision-making points around the management of a patient presenting with nicotine dependence and comorbid alcohol use disorder. Key points and practical tips on overcoming common barriers will be presented. Downloadable tools are also provided to help clinicians in their practice.
Elements of CompetenceThis CME/CE activity has been designed to change learner performance focusing on the American Board of Medical Specialties area of patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, and interpersonal and communication skills.
INTENDED AUDIENCE:
This activity is designed for psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and other healthcare professionals, such as nurses and pharmacists, whose scope of practice includes providing care to patients who use tobacco and who have alcohol use disorders.
Activity Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to: - Evaluate the importance of assisting patients who have alcohol use disorders with smoking cessation.
- Apply strategies for motivating and supporting patients in efforts to quit smoking.
- Choose effective smoking cessation treatment approaches to assist patients with alcohol use disorders.
