PAs in India Expand from Specialties to Primary Care
Ever wondered how far the physician assistant profession has spread around the world? One of the strongholds is in India, where the idea is at least 20 years old. Interestingly, the first Indian PAs appeared in a specialty field, cardiac surgery. Since then PAs have moved into other specialty fields and, more recently, have begun eyeing primary care. There are reportedly almost 50 PA educational programs that have produced more than 1,000 PAs. Still, the profession faces challenges in the country, including low awareness of the profession among patients, lack of a standardized curriculum in educational programs, and no government licensure to recognize formally trained PAs.
